The Commuter Challenge (June 3 – 9) encourages Canadian workplaces and their employees to leave the car at home and cycle, walk, bus, carpool or telecommute. Reducing ‘drive-alone’ trips in this way has many benefits, including less traffic congestion, reduced GHG emissions, and healthier citizens. Not to mention saving money as gas prices seem to keep going up!

Results: The Comox Valley achieved sixth placebased on percent participation per capita (0.18%) and had the second highest number of workplaces registered in BC at 104. 152 people tracked their commute (from the 206 employees and 18 individuals that were registered). $1500 in prizing (including in-kind value) was given away for registration prizes, team prizes and commuter prizes.
The results for the winning organizations were as follows:
- Large Organization Category Winner (over 30 employees): Dairy Queen Courtenaywith 28% participation (199 km)
- Medium Organization Category Winner (11-29 employees): Presley and Partners with 32% participation (53 km)
- Small Organization Category Winner (3-10 employees): Coastal Physiotherapy with 100% participation (148 km)
- Mini Organization Category Winner (1-2 employees): Medley, Lang and Associates with 100% participation (121 km)
- Individual winner ($200 GC to Quality Foods): Andrea Daughertry, Wee Care Puntledge (usual mode of transport: transit)

Transportation Choice Results
- Cycling was the highest mode of transportation tracked during the Commuter Challenge (37%).
- The second highest tracked mode was telecommuting (34%), however one organization tracked over 2,000 km telecommuted from Victoria, skewing the results
- Carpooling accounted for 17%, walking accounted for 7% and transit accounted for 4%, with scooters accounting for 1%.
